Sandy Point kitesurfing weekend, winter one day summer the next #596 #597

Another fine kitesurfing weekend with the lads, staying at Walkerville.  Its been a poor season so far for kitesurfing but the wind forecast was good for late Saturday and on Sunday.

 

Session 596. Cold winter conditions late in the afternoon with squalls coming through from the west. Solid 30 knots so I used my 6m kite in case it got a lot stronger. I was a bit underpowered at times. Got out the back by picking gaps and had some nice runs in.

 

Dinner at the Fish Creek Hotel was excellent.

No tracklog.

Session 597. Back to Sandy Point but spring conditions now.  

 

Warm and sunny with 15-20 knots of wind. I used my 9m kite which was good for the first half of the session. Some big surf made for exciting runs.

The wind dropped later on. I couldn't get back up wind, eventually dropped the kite and walked back.

Session #587.  Big surf and good wind made for a great session. I took it easy due to lack of practice.  Self landing was a hassle.

Session 548. Strong wind and a huge surf - Sandy Point once again confirmed as one of the best kitesurfing locations in Victoria.

The waves were so big I didn't make it out the back.  It was difficult to get a good shoulder in the middle of the waves but perseverance paid off.

Session 543. Nice session at Sandy Point, I was the only kite out.  The wind was solid and the small waves were nice.

Session 512. The long overdue kitesurfing weekend with the lads finally happened.  My hip was sore enough to stop me kiting for the morning session in the surf at Sandy Point so I took some photos of the lads in action.

I drove to Waratah Bay for a look and discovered there was good wind along the beach out 1km from the hamlet - a downwinder back to Sandy Point would be good (with a car shuffle).

After lunch my hip was feeling a better so I ventured out for a short enjoyable session.

Sandy Point delivered again.  It was not to difficult to pick gaps heading out through the waves and there were some big ones to catch coming in.  I was out the back a couple of times thinking I was past the break when monster waves loomed up.  Here's a short video with a cameo from Stuart

The wind dropped a bit so I came in - and my hip was getting a bit sore too.  Great to get in a session after having the morning off.

We had dinner at Fish Creek hotel, then 3 of us went to my "kite cabin" at Walkerville for a good night's sleep.

Session 493. November 2019 kitesurfing weekend. There wasn't much wind at Sandy Point surf beach. I need to fix the lines on my Ocean Rodeo Flite 14.5 - it might have been big enough to get going. The Wave 12 didn't have enough grunt.

We headed to our accommodation at Walkerville North for some great Indian food provided by Dobbo and fantastic views across Waratah Bay to Wilsons Prom.

Kitesurfing weekend with howling wind and giant surf at Sandy Point

Session 471. Eight keen kitesurfers converged at Sandy Point for another kitesurfing weekend.  Stu W, Stu S, Tarren, James, Dobbo, Adam, Anthony and myself.

Very strong 30+ knot wind on Saturday provided epic surf conditions. I did a couple of  sessions on my 8m Union kite.  It was good having plenty of power as the waves were huge, so big that I didn't make it right out the back.

I swapped to my 6m Wave for the third session, it had plenty of power and was better for riding the waves.  Definitely a small kite day!

The wind was around 23 knots on Sunday and the surf a bit more manageable, I got out the back and rode some big waves several times.  Traversing out the back I thought I was past the break, then a monster loomed up.  There was no way I could over or behind it so I rode it in.  Massive power in the wave then I got munched but I kept my kite flying.

Lots of tired and happy faces over lunch, then I headed home.

In my estimation Sandy Point is the best kitesurfing beach in Victoria.  Its wide and has nice shallow flat sections before the surf and you can pick your way out in big surf then catch some big waves.

Session 441. What a tour!  I left my car at the inlet, Bruce drove me back to the surf club. We started doing some tacks in the nice surf at Sandy Point.  The waves there are great for kitesurfing as its usually easy to get out the back then pick some good waves to ride back in on.

Then it was off downwind, enjoying good waves all the way to the Shallow Inlet mouth.  I was keen to go further so I took headed further along the beach.  The waves got bigger and the water got clearer and more blue.  I went as far as the first rock outcrop on the beach.  The dark shapes in the water there were small sections of reef.

The view down to Tongue Point in the distance was great, the view looking out to the dramatic Shellback Island offshore was fantastic.

I was on my own so I headed back.  Stu W, Stu S and Tarren had driven all the way back from Tathra in the morning after 4 hours kitesurfing yesterday so they were less frisky than usual.

I got back on a single tack and could have easily kept going back to the surf club but the inlet beckoned.  There was some lovely flat water and good wind.  I clocked my fastest ever speed at 53.3 km/h. Back near the car there were wind shadows, we definately had the best kitesurfing along the beach and near the mouth of the inlet.

Stoked to complete such a great session.  Next time I will scope out kiting around Tongue Point and landing at Squeaky Beach.  That would be a grand tour!

He had a good meal in the pub at Inverloch, very contented with our exploits.
