Kai Lenny visits The Zu Boardsports

I met Kai Lenny when he visited Melbourne and stopped by at The Zu Boardsports in St Kilda.  Kai is the 2012 SUP racing world champion at the age of 20, which is a remarkable achievement.

It was great to hear him talk about his water sports, including Stand Up Paddleboard surfing (SUP), windsurfing, kitesurfing and big wave surfing.  Kai said the doesn't really have a favourite, he just loves to be on the water.

He is also involved is SUP board development with his relationship with Naish, who also sponsor him.

Kai was certainly popular with the many local Melbourne SUPers, kitesurfers and windsurfers who came to meet him, including some youngsters getting into windsurfing.

Kai is based in Maui, but travels with world to compete and do the watersports he loves.

Bracing kitesurfing conditions upwind at Brighton

Session 187. Saturday 25 August 2012

Stuart, Tarren and I headed down to Hampton in the morning, but there was no wind.  We drove around to Brighton and watched for a while.  To our great relief the wind picked up to over 15 knots to we kitted up and headed out.   It took a bit longer for me to set up my kitecam, boardcam and helmet cam, as well as fitting fins to the Sector 60.  Once on the water, Stuart was off shore with his kite down and winding it in - he had snapped a line he recently replaced.  Tarrren took his board in, then he sailed his kite back to shore.  

The water was very cold.  Even wearing booties my feet got cold.  It would have been nice to have a drysuit!  

The Sector 60 board was hooting along with my Switchblade 10m kite, but my gybes were very rusty after several recent great sessions on the surfboard.  The Sector 60 turns quite differently, and the more wind the easier it is to gybe.  I tried a couple of pre-gybe turns but lost to much boardspeed and plopped in.

There was a wind hole about 200 meters offshore, where I turned and came back in.  Then the wind picked up a bit so I did a couple of upwind tacks and cleared the Brighton breakwater and headed right up to Elwood.  I hit some wood once.  Some wood and debris seems to have been washed into the bay by recent heavy rains and is floating around. It is hard to see.

I did a very fast downwind leg back to Brighton then came in.   The Sector 60 board is great for these conditions.  I could have gone to St Kilda quite easily if I wanted too.

Kitesurfing at Port Melbourne next to the Spirit of Tasmania

Session 158, Thursday 15 December 2011

A late sea breeze sprang up late in the afternoon so I met Stuart at Port Melbourne for a really nice kitesurfing session.  Stuart was already on the water, so I rigged up my Noise 12m kite without delay, mounted my new Contour Roam video camera with the Kitehero Line Mount and headed out.

After a few tacks we headed along offshore to the east.  There was quite a nice small bay surf rolling in.  It was a glorious day with good sunshine and not too hot.

Once again, it was really nice to be on the water.  I did a few small jumps, but the wind backed off a bit so jumping became difficult.

Its nice cruising towards the large Spirit of Tasmania ferry that was loading cars and getting ready to depart.  It sailed away when were out of the water and loading the car.

The Contour Roam camera was a great success, it takes wonderful footage with its wide angle lens.

Kitesurfing 747 pilot Claire Bunton

Here is an interesting video ad (via Dan Harris) about accomplished kitesurfer Claire Bunton who is also a Captain on the British Airway’s B747 fleet.


Flying is in Claire’s blood. One of her ancestors is Amy Johnson, the pioneering British aviator. Her father and grandfather were also in aviation. She and her husband Kevin first learnt to kite surf for their first wedding anniversary in 1999, when the sport was just getting started.

By 2002 she was competing in the UK and internationally winning the BKSA championship and ranked number two in the world at the PKRA World Tour. During this time she was still flying for British Airways and had taken her command on the airline’s B747 ‘jumbo’ fleet.
